Week 1: 2018 Class A football power rankings

August 25, 2018

The first week of Nebraska high school football is in the books. Here’s a look at our Class A top ten, brought to you by PRIME Roofing:

10. Lincoln Southwest (1-0)

The Silver Hawks traveled to Lincoln High to take on the Lincoln North Star Navigators. They came out with a 43-0 win, allowing just 133 yards to North Star on the night.

9. Lincoln High (0-1)

Mark Macke’s Links, fresh off an eight-win campaign in 2017, hit the road to see Bellevue West on Friday. Quarterback Cedric Case threw for 411 yards on 32 completions, but Lincoln High fell in double overtime 49-43.

8. Grand Island (1-0)

The Islanders hosted 2017 state runner-up Kearney in their first game of the season, and came out with a standout 46-0 win highlighted by a 20-point second quarter.

7. Omaha Westside (1-0)

The Warriors cashed in a 52-0 win at Bellevue East, highlighted by a 21-point second quarter and a punt return touchdown from senior Joe Stegman.

6. Millard South (1-0)

The Patriots didn’t let the hype of Gretna’s first game in Class A get in their way, as Millard South defeated the Dragons 27-0 on Thursday night.

5. Millard West (1-0)

Millard South’s Buell Stadium housed all three Millard schools this week, as Millard West took down Millard North on Friday night in a convincing 35-0 fashion.

4. Omaha North (0-1)

The defending Class A state champions faced Omaha Creighton Prep on Thursday night to kick off their 2018 campaign. Despite halfback Zander Gray’s 234 yards, the Vikings fell 12-7. (See our Omaha Creighton Prep vs. Omaha North recap here.)

3. Bellevue West (1-0)

Bellevue West, on the heels of their first multi-loss season since 2014, slid by 9th-ranked Lincoln High on Friday night with a 49-43 double overtime win. Jay Ducker's touchdown rush put them on top at the end. The Thunderbirds pulled out the hard-fought win despite giving up 494 total yards of Links offense.

2. Omaha Burke (1-0)

The Bulldogs handled their week one challenge with ease, as they came out with a 49-28 victory against Lincoln Southeast. Quarterback Tyler Chadwick led the Bulldogs offensively, throwing for 236 yards. And as always, Nebraska commit linebacker Nick Henrich had one heck of a game with 11 tackles and one sack.

1. Omaha Creighton Prep (1-0)

A 12-7 win against defending state champion Omaha North slides the Junior Jays into the top spot of our power rankings. Senior Jackson Bartling led the charge for Tim Johnk’s crew with 96 rushing yards, although Luke Sims' 4-yard touchdown with 1:47 remaining was the ultimate difference in this game. (See our Omaha Creighton Prep vs. Omaha North recap here.)
