Omaha Creighton Prep's Akol Arop stays home, commits to Huskers
One of the biggest stories in Nebraska high school basketball came on October 3, weeks before the season even began.
Akol Arop, the high-flying senior forward out of defending Class A champ Omaha Creighton Prep, officially committed to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Arop is the best senior in the state and is ranked in the top 300 nationally. He chose the Huskers over Division I schools including the University of Nebraska-Omaha and Drake University.
“I had great relationships with UNO and Drake,” Arop said. “It was hard to break the news to them, because I had built a wonderful relationship with them.” 6-5 and 180-pound Arop has been among the most dominant players in Class A over the years, displaying sharp instincts and wowing fans with countless highlight reel dunks and blocks. Arop will likely need to bulk up to compete in Division I, but is already starting to look like a college-level wing. His three-ball has improved over the years too, which will be instrumental at the next level as he looks to shift to the wing position. The commitment bumps Nebraska’s 2019 recruiting class rank up to 35. He’s joined by Mika Adams-Woods, the 6-2 guard from New York, and JUCO transfer Jervay Green.
After mulling over the offers, Arop decided the Huskers have everything he needs. For him, Nebraska quickly became the perfect fit. “I chose Nebraska, because they chose me,” Arop said. “I felt like Nebraska was the right fit for me, they had everything I needed there, and I’m excited to be able to represent Nebraska across my chest!”
