Westside's undefeated defense continues to shine in win over Elkhorn South
Concession stand hot dogs on a grill with a dozen people crowded around could only mean one thing: late-season football. This was the scene at Omaha Westside’s Phelps Field as the fourth-ranked Warriors took down the tenth-ranked Elkhorn South Storm, 35-21. Westside kicker Jack Bush opened up the game’s scoring with a midrange field goal. Avante Dickerson also contributed to the Warriors' first half score, cashing in a 60-yard run for six.
Cooper Jewett scored two first half rushing touchdowns and had the Storm up 14-10 at halftime. The second half was where the Westside defense, which has given up only 55 offensive points this season for an average of eight per game, began to show its true colors. They helped the Warriors outscore Elkhorn South 25-7 in the third and fourth quarters. That scoring was capped off by lineman Nolan “Deuce” Miller-Johnston hopping on a blocked punt in the end zone with 6:08 remaining in the game. “Being a lineman, scoring a touchdown, you don’t get to do that often. It meant the world to me,” Miller-Johnston said. Head coach Brett Froendt noted that although the win was great, the Warriors still have a lot of work to do. “We’re 7-0, we got our third district win. Which is big, that secures us a home playoff first game,” Froendt said. “But we’re not done. We want to make sure we finish off strong.” The undefeated Westside Warriors will return to Phelps Field next Friday, October 12 as they take on Columbus. Elkhorn South, now 4-3, will look to bounce back next Thursday when they host Omaha Northwest.
